DHL Express Freight takes fast route to Europe

Istanbul link opens up new gateway as truck freight network expansion is stepped up

DHL, the Middle East's leading express and logistics company, today announced that Express Freight, its premium bespoke trucking service for heavyweight goods, has been extended with a new route to Europe through Istanbul in Turkey.

The Deutsche Post World Net (DPWN) subsidiary unveiled two new routes - to the prime destinations Cairo and Istanbul to a trade gathering in Jebel Ali, fast becoming one of the premier hubs for DHL's trucking and logistics activities in the region. Phil Couchman, DHL's Director Middle East, said: "This truck freight link to Europe has tremendous potential and is certainly unique to DHL.

"The service to Turkey will link DHL Europe to DHL Middle East, offering customers in both markets a competitive alternative to ocean and airfreight services. This route will effectively transform truck freight in the region by expanding the network available to our customers to include the vast European market.

"It adds an important lane to our highway to Europe, which was previously limited to a bi-monthly service to Cologne, Germany, where shipments are then moved through DHL's European Road Express network to their final destination.

"The supply chain possibilities that will be opened up by this new route are immense. Europe-based multinationals with outlets in the region will welcome the move as much as, for example, our regional oil and gas customers with repair facilities in Europe for whom an air solution is not an option."

DHL's Road Express freight network has seen enormous expansion, with Jebel Ali acting as a catalyst for its growth. The service, which operates daily within the Middle East and Europe, transports shipment weights from 45kgs to 18,000kgs.

It covers the UAE, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi, Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt and Yemen. Couchman added: "Our truck network is expanding to enable us to serve more destinations through a scheduled door-to-door service.

"The truck freight market is huge and as the number one operator in the sector we have to deliver what our customers want. They expect DHL to expand its network to locations where they send freight and they require an alternative to air. This is what we are providing with the addition of these two new routes.

"Industry segments in general are driving the new lanes. This is why, for example, a new lane is planned for Iran later this year to cater for the oil and gas industry and the general freight market.

"More and more of our customers buy into what DHL's Express Freight stands for: Total peace of mind, reliability and top quality service standards.

"The perception is there among customers that they can rely on DHL to take care of all their road freight consignments and that the service is the most secure, reliable and efficient way to deliver LTL shipments."

The basis of the service is DHL's truck fleet, which has hubs in Abu Dhabi, Jebel Ali, Bahrain and Amman, Jordan. Couchman said: "We have unique customs clearance expertise so the trucks won't get stuck at the border. We are utterly reliable and have the resources to track freight consignments at all times."
