DHL presents a new product for Germany today at the "transport logistic" trade fair: the "Grüne Paket" (Green Parcel). With this product, the express and logistics specialist within the Deutsche Post World Net Group launches the first-ever CarbonNeutral parcel shipping service. All transport-related CO2 emissions will be tracked and counter-balanced by way of worldwide climate protection projects.
The "Grüne Paket", which on the outside doesn't look any different to standard items, was developed together with the German mail-order company Triaz. Triaz carries the Waschbär and Panda brands and is offering environmentally-friendly shipping of its products for the first time starting in July with the circulation of its fall/winter catalog. This commitment on the part of DHL and the Freiburg mail-order company will not result in any extra charges to the customer. The British company, Future Forests, is responsible for the selection and quality-control of the climate protection projects through its CarbonNeutral services standard.
For its commitment to climate protection in parcel logistics, Triaz will be awarded the DHL Environmental Award 2005 today by Dr. Monika Wulf-Mathies, head of the Corporate Department for Policy and Sustainability at Deutsche Post World Net. "For Deutsche Post World Net, climate protection means not only the improvement of our resource efficiency, for example through the acquisition of 70 new natural gas powered delivery vehicles. In addition to that we also want to offer our customers innovative and sustainable logistics concepts," says Wulf-Mathies. "We are pleased that Triaz and DHL have implemented the "Grüne Paket" and we hope that more mail-order companies will take advantage of this new product as well."
Triaz ships approximately seven million catalogues and one million parcels each year, which results in the production of approximately 850 metric tons of greenhouse gases. By applying the climate protection means described in the Kyoto Protocol, these emissions will be neutralized by projects that lessen CO2 emissions. The cooperation of DHL, Triaz and Future Forest will support the reforestation of illegally deforested areas in Bhutan, as well as the financing of community-based solar power systems in Sri Lanka that support development of a non-fossil-fuel based power supply, and much needed infrastructure development after the tsunami.
